Yorkshire is a vast area with a population in the region of five million with 21 major hospitals. We now have one postgraduate deanery and three independent but coordinated schools of anaesthesia each delivering the RCoA curriculum. The Leeds/Bradford School has 67 core trainees and the East Coast School based in Hull has 38 trainees. The number of trainees reflects the size of the hospitals and the training opportunities available.
For the August 2008 ST1 intake we received about 250 applications for 28 vacancies in the Leeds/Bradford and East Coast schools and interviewed about 50 candidates.
Anaesthetic core training is based on a network of three schools each based in a large city, with rotations to and from the local district hospitals.
