The Yorkshire and the Humber School of Primary Care is part of NHS Education Yorkshire and the Humber. Working as part of the Strategic Health Authority, the School of General Practice has a role in the development, support and retention of a primary care workforce that is fit for purpose and meets the needs of the population of Yorkshire and the Humber.

The Yorkshire and Humber Deanery is not the GP StR’s employer. GP StRs should be offered a contract by their employer (Hospital Trust or GP Practice) at the start of each post. The terms and conditions of employment are set by the employer and should take account of nationally agreed terms and conditions. Even if the GP StR moves between several different employers in the course of their training programme, their employment in the NHS is considered continuous when calculating statutory entitlements. GP StRs should be aware that pay and conditions can vary from one post to another and they should take account of this when considering taking on financial commitments. As the NHS works towards reducing working hours for junior doctors, I expect that the value of out of hours supplements to be reduced in the coming years.
I recommend that all GP StRs consider joining the BMA if they have not already done so.
I hope that all our new trainees enjoy their time in Yorkshire, that following training they will settle into General Practice somewhere in Yorkshire and that they find their chosen career in General Practice a fulfilling one.
