Trainees in Difficulty

School Policy on 'Training Performance Concerns'

The school policy follows a similar format to the generic deanery policy for managing performance concerns and falls within that policy however it has been adapted to be more specific for the different challenges of the GP training programme, when in doubt the overall deanery policy is the policy that should be followed.

RDM-p Resources

On this page you will find a set of forms and resources that may help you with identifying the particular problem area with a trainee in difficulty.

They have already been used by several trainers and though sometimes the initial reaction has been “This is yet another form and much of the information is already on the e portfolio or shared knowledge” the conclusion that has consistently been fed back after this has been used is that they are a useful addition to understanding of the situation.

They can be used for any trainee, but may be particularly useful when there are concerns that things may not be going quite as normal… to try to help trainer and trainee clarify where the problem is and start to work on it

One of the tools that most trainers find helpful is the RDM-p model which stands for:

  • Relationship
  • Diagnostics
  • Management
  • And professionalism

The RDM-p screening tool (available under the resources section in the right hand column) can help you identify trainees in difficult and the nature of that difficulty.

This is also the structure that the new Clinical Supervisors Report is based on and can be linked back to the GP trainee competencies that we are all familiar with.
