Hull

Sitting next to the Pennines (Sheffield) and the Yorkshire Dales (Leeds), the quieter charms of East Yorkshire are often undeservedly overlooked. The same is true of its hospitals and the postgraduate training they offer, which has seen huge changes over the last ten years.

The most important development has been the Hull York Medical School (HYMS), now led by Professor Anthony Kendrick, which produced its first graduates in 2008.  Some of those first HYMS graduates have now been appointed to local ST1 specialty training posts, but those who have left us will spread the growing reputation of the medical school as a high quality innovative institution. The University of Hull is regularly voted among the most student-friendly institutions, and the social opportunities for young people play a large part in this. The local acute Trusts have seen a large rise in both consultant numbers and junior doctor posts, and a large number of successful training schemes are provided, with good feedback from trainees. The locality is now independent in tertiary specialties except for solid organ transplantation. Academic posts are flourishing, in collaboration with HYMS.
