The School of Paediatrics:
This is the organisation which is responsible for the delivery of training, education and experience to those who want to grow up to be paediatricians. The school co ordinates the delivery of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health’s curriculum across the deanery. It is responsible for developing and enhancing your experience as well as ensuring that the children of the deanery get to see appropriately experienced doctors, no matter where they are unwell.
The school has a structure specified by the deanery. There is an overarching head of school who has strategic responsibility. Each rotation is led by a training programme director, along with several deputies. Each hospital, which trains paediatricians, will have one or more clinical tutors, who are Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health appointments. The clinical tutors will be responsible to the directors of medical education, who are employed by each hospital to ensure educational deliver is high quality. There are also two regional advisors who are appointments from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.
The School Board has representation for the training programme directors, the regional advisors and the deanery, as well as personnel, directors of postgraduate medical education and doctors from the rotation. Additionally the two educational committees which run the day release training programmes are represented on the school board.
Each rotation will have a speciality training committee, which has the training programme directors, the clinical tutors and doctors from the rotation.
The school also co ordinates the annual review process for doctors and hospitals on the rotation. The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health has a very clear assessment strategy, which the school will follow. The GMC have a very clear set of quality standards that both the school and the hospitals follow.
Should you have any concerns, you can contact your clinical supervisor, or your local clinical tutor. If required you can contact the training programme director or deputy responsible. You can also contact your local deanery office for advice.
