Welcome to the School of Psychiatry site
Psychiatry as a Career
Of all the branches of medicine, Psychiatry is one of the most stimulating and enjoyable. Reliance is still on clinical skills, there are very few tests available and diagnosis is made on history and examination. The patients are challenging and helping them to return to good mental health is enormously rewarding. If you choose to enter Psychiatry you will never be bored or feel that you don't make a difference. You will also become highly skilled at team working with all the advantages and support that this brings.
The School
The Yorkshire and the Humber School of Psychiatry provides training in psychiatry at all levels and in all sub-specialties.
Core Training
Trainees enter core training from Foundation or from other types of experience. Three years are spent in core training. During this time there is the opportunity to try different specialties within psychiatry and to gain the necessary skills to pass the MRCPsych examination. Trainees attend a day release course that prepares them for the exam.
The School recognises that variety of experience is valuable and a number of trainees take a year out to work in Australia or New Zealand
Higher Training
The School provides training leading to CCT in all the sub-specialties. These include:
- Child / Adolescent Psychiatry
- Forensic Psychiatry
- General Adult Psychiatry
- Learning Disability Psychiatry
- Old Age Psychiatry
- Psychotherapy
Progress from core to higher training is not guaranteed and trainees have to apply in open competition for higher training posts. The excellence of our core training schemes has meant that a high proportion of our core trainees stay with us and progress into our higher training schemes.
Less than full time training
Psychiatry has a long tradition of supporting less than full time trainees and I am keen to ensure that training can be adjusted as circumstances change.
I take a personal interest in the careers of all the trainees within the school and can always be contacted for advice. If you would like to ask any questions or arrange a visit please email be at wendy.burn@nhs.net
