Cardiothoracic Surgery
Overview
The Yorkshire School of Surgery provides a training programme in Cardiothoracic Surgery. Entry is at ST3 Level and is governed centrally by the Surgical Advisory Committee based at The Royal College of Surgeons of England. It is likely that 5 posts will become available in 2008. The appointments and programme allocation will be made by the SAC.
Training Programmes
The training programme extends over 6 years and is based at 3 hospital sites:-
Leeds General Infirmary - Cardiac surgery
St James University Hospital, Leeds - Thoracic surgery
Castle Hill Hospital, Hull - Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery
Teaching and Learning
The programme provides training in all aspects of adult cardiothoracic surgery, with the exception of transplantation. There would also be the possibility of obtaining paediatric cardiac surgical experience at Leeds Infirmary.
The programme follows the new curriculum outlined on the ISCP website www.iscp.ac.uk. There is a continuous programme of formal and informal postgraduate education and regular case conferences with allied specialities. There is access to departmental, postgraduate and medical school libraries.
Progress in training will be monitored by the Speciality Training Committee on a six monthly basis at the end of each module.
Study Leave
Study leave is available through the School for training courses and academic meetings.
