The Deanery

Clinical Leadership and Management Fellowships

The Yorkshire and Humber Postgraduate Deanery are pleased to offer a number of important and highly regarded Clinical Leadership training opportunities for trainees.

Why are these posts important?

Healthcare leaders and managers are at the forefront of delivering future system change and are required to work in increasingly complex environments. This requires a sophisticated set of insights and skills, many of which are grounded in management and leadership domains. Traditionally many clinical leaders tended to find themselves in management positions by default, with few formal opportunities provided for personal development in the competencies of management or leadership and very little succession planning.

The NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement and the Academy of Royal Colleges have produced the Medical Leadership Competency Framework (2010) which sets out the rationale and a framework of competences to enable doctors at all levels to become more actively involved in the planning, delivery and transformation of health services (2010, p2). Many Speciality School training competences now include leadership and management competencies.

There are defined benefits to all stakeholders to collaborating in the provision of posts in Clinical Leadership and Management. They will derive demonstrable benefit in the form of improved performance of trainees and the management of identified management projects. The trainees will participate in a unique opportunity and will enhance their career prospects and potential to engage in senior clinical and clinical academic posts.

Aims of the Y & H Deanery Clinical Leadership and Management posts.

To:

  • gain practical and academic experience in medical leadership from local experts in the field
  • build a network of expert contacts with medical and NHS management leaders
  • enhance skills and competencies that are essential for future medical leaders
  • develop competencies relevant to the domains defined in the MLCF
  • develop and deliver a specialty or management driven project that is relevant to the specific needs of the NHS
  • complete an accredited academic leadership qualification

To achieve these aims the post will be based at host institutions where a live project aligned to these aims will be led and managed by the post holder. In addition the post holder will attend an academic programme.
