Welcome to the new West Yorkshire Foundation School website
The West Yorkshire Foundation School incorporates hospitals in Airedale, Bradford, Dewsbury, Halifax, Harrogate, Huddersfield, Leeds, Pontefract and Wakefield as well as community placements in psychiatry and general practice.
We are one of several Foundation Schools in the country and one of three in the Yorkshire and Humber Deanery.
Like all the other Foundation Schools in the UK we provide training which meets the requirements of the Foundation curriculum and believe our particular strengths are:
- All trainees (except those doing Academic Foundation programmes) do their Foundation Years in two different hospitals (a teaching hospital (Leeds or Bradford) for one year and a general district hospital for the other) which provides trainees with broader and more varied experience of treating patients in different clinical environments.
- We ensure the two year Foundation programme meet the Foundation curriculum requirements, but as we run an internal FY1/FY2 matching process there is an opportunity for trainees to preference their Foundation Year 2 programme potentially giving them valuable experience in a specialty which may help their future career pathway.
- We hold a Foundation Year 2 Presentation Day which enables Foundation Year 2 trainees to present an audit project to their peers and Training Programme Directors. The 8 best presentations from the School go forward to a grand final and compete for the Sir Jimmy Savile Trophy which is both an enjoyable and educational event.
- We provide a formalised generic skills tutorial programme for FY1 and FY2 trainees. This is designed to provide Foundation trainees with specific tuition in generic aspects of the Foundation curriculum including patient safety, risk management, clinical governance, data protection and team working.
- We have 12 Academic Foundation Training Programmes and all WYFS academic trainees are enrolled on Leeds University’s Postgraduate Certificate in Health Research and present their research at the Yorkshire and Humber an Academic Foundation Training Day in July each year.
We believe any trainee coming to the West Yorkshire Foundation School will receive good training which meets the requirements of the Foundation Curriculum and serve as a good platform to launch their future careers.
