East Yorkshire Core Psychiatry rotation

The East Yorkshire Core Psychiatry rotation is centred around the historic city of Kingston Upon Hull, the picturesque county of East Yorkshire and coastal North East Lincolnshire.

From August 2021 there will be 14 training placements provided by Humber NHS and NAViGO Mental Health Trusts within general adult, old age, child and adolescent, liaison, addictions, forensic and intellectual disability psychiatry.

Within the weekly trainee timetable there is protected time available to attend the Core Psychiatry Training Course (MRCPsych course), Trust CPD activities and psychotherapy training.

There is an active teaching programme each Wednesday morning at the Willerby Lecture theatre, which includes case conferences, critical reviews of academic papers and expert presentations from invited speakers.

Psychotherapy training is provided locally through case-based discussion (Balint) groups, formal teaching, and long and short cases. Trainees are supervised by non-medical psychotherapists and a medical psychotherapy tutor.

The training rotation has close links with Hull & York Medical School (HYMS) allowing opportunities for academic and undergraduate training.

Training Committee

  • Clinical and Educational Supervisors, Training Programme Director, College Tutor, Director of Medical Education and Psychotherapy Tutor

North Yorkshire

North Yorkshire Core Psychiatry rotation

The North Yorkshire Core Psychiatry rotation is a popular and well-regarded rotation with an excellent track record of success in the Membership examinations for the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych).

Training placements in the Victorian spa town of Harrogate, the ancient market town of Northallerton, the seaside resort of Scarborough and the historic city of York give trainees the opportunity to experience all the advantages of living and working in the largest county in England.

From August 2021 there will be 24 placements within general adult, old age, child and adolescent, intellectual disability, forensic, addictions, assertive outreach, crisis resolution and intensive home treatment psychiatry. The training placements are provided by Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys (TEWV) and Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trusts.

We have an established programme for psychotherapy training, and a dedicated local medical psychotherapy tutor, allowing trainees to meet the curriculum requirements for psychotherapy training.

All trainees are expected to attend the weekly academic training program in York. This includes case presentations and critical appraisal led by trainees, guest lectures from national and international speakers, and MRCPsych exam focused training. Trainees will attend face-to-face and video-conferenced teaching on the Core Psychiatry Training Course (CPTC), which is based in Leeds, up to one day every fortnight. The expanding Hull and York Medical School (HYMS) brings opportunities for trainees to be involved in undergraduate teaching.

All trainees are members of the North Yorkshire Psychiatric Trainees Association, which arranges an active social calendar and meets monthly to discuss local and general training issues. There is a local training committee to discuss programme development attended by trainee, trust medical education, and deanery representatives.

South Yorkshire

South Yorkshire Core Psychiatry Rotation

Welcome to the South Yorkshire Core Psychiatry Rotation!

We offer great training opportunities with experienced trainers and this is evidenced by the fact that many core trainees stay on in the region for higher training.

The South Yorkshire rotation has 5 local education providers serving a diverse population.

Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust (SHSC) is the lead employer for core trainees on the rotation and the local provider of the Core Psychiatry Training Course (CPTC). The trust provides fourteen placements across the city of Sheffield in general adult, old age, and liaison, low secure, and substance misuse and rehabilitation psychiatry. It is also the main centre for psychotherapy training and research activity.

Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDASH) is a large trust in the heart of South Yorkshire that provides twelve placements in general adult, old age, and CAMHS. The placements are distributed across the main population centres of Rotherham, Doncaster and Scunthorpe.

Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust provides two general adult placements in Bassetlaw (North Notts) and four forensic medium secure placements at Wathwood Hospital RSU (Rotherham).

South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SWYFT) provides four placements in general adult, old age, and liaison psychiatry in and around Barnsley.

Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust (SCH) provides four posts in community and day patient CAMHS.

In general we have about 40 core trainees on the rotation. Recently we have also had expansion with 3 additional core trainee posts being funded for 3 years and we hope this will continue to be the case going forward.

The geographical distribution of placements requires trainees to work across different trusts during their core training. This provides a diversity of training providers and enables a depth of experience.

South Yorkshire is a great place to live with lots of green space, 3 theatres and access to the beautiful Peak District.

We look forward to welcoming you to Core Psychiatry Training in South Yorkshire!

West Yorkshire

The West Yorkshire Core Psychiatry Training rotation sits within the Yorkshire and Humber School of Psychiatry spanning Calderdale and Kirklees, Bradford and Airedale, and Leeds and Wakefield.

This beautiful and diverse region of the country offers something for everyone.  The cosmopolitan city of Leeds is bustling with shops, sightseeing, eateries, sport and nightlife; whilst Bradford can showcase its Victorian industrial heritage and grand parks.  Those needing a break from this can be charmed by the numerous quaint towns, villages and rolling countryside, which are literally minutes away. You will be wowed by the Pennine trails and cycle ways as you explore Bronte-country villages and vales in this inspiring literary county.

The rotation currently hosts 70 core training posts and has expanded in recent years with the rapid development of academic training fellows across the region.  These posts have attracted national funding, testament to their success.

Trainees are encouraged to learn and develop and are well supported by a strong and cohesive group of educationalists who work between the main Mental Health Trusts and Health Education England.

Successful trainees will have the opportunity to experience work across the West Yorkshire region with their training and placement choices being overseen by an educational supervisor, psychotherapy supervisor and training programme director.

There are a wide range of opportunities available for trainees. Alongside inpatient and community general adult and older peoples’ services, there are low and medium secure forensic placements, and psychotherapy, perinatal, addictions, inpatient liaison and eating disorder placements.

Trainee experience and satisfaction is paramount for all of us and we are proud that the MRCPsych pass rate is above the national average. Local Trusts score highly in GMC satisfaction surveys and the high level of retention of core trainees progressing to higher training and Consultant posts only serves to demonstrate the success of the rotation.
