Hull
The understated charms of the Wolds (‘Hockney country’) in North and East Yorkshire are overshadowed by the more obvious qualities of the Eastern Pennines (Sheffield) and the Yorkshire Dales (Leeds). The same is true of its hospitals and the postgraduate training that they offer, which has seen huge developments over the last fifteen years. The locality is now independent clinically in all tertiary specialties except for solid organ transplantation and paediatric intensive care.
The most important educational infrastructure development has been the Hull York Medical School (HYMS), now led by Professor Tony Kendrick, which produced its first graduates in 2008. HYMS graduates have now completed training in General Practice and joined the local medical community, and others have been appointed to local ST3 higher specialty training posts. About half of all HYMS graduates remain in the Yorkshire region, and those who have left us are spreading the growing reputation of the medical school as a high quality innovative institution. The University of Hull is regularly voted among the most student-friendly institutions, and the social opportunities for young people play a large part in this. Academic posts are increasing in collaboration with HYMS
The Acute Trusts in Hull and York have both had major capital investment programmes, and have seen a large rise in consultant numbers and junior doctor posts; a large number of successful training schemes are provided, with good feedback from Postgraduate Doctors in Training (PGDiTs). The longer commuting distances compared with South and West Yorkshire are balanced by the much less congested roads, and overall travel times are not much greater.
