Workforce, training and education
Yorkshire and Humber
Thinking of joining us and coming to live and train in North/East/West Yorkshire?

Here's a little list of why I think that's a great idea...

THE PLACE
Yorkshire is an incredibly stunning place to live. The countryside, often within a short drive away from the cities and towns (and hospitals) will literally take your breath away

THE PEOPLE
You will struggle to find a more a welcoming bunch than the locals who live here and therefore the patients we treat.
As a group of registrars we are a small but friendly team who understand the pressures of specialist training and look to support each other. Although based across 7 different sites, monthly registrar teaching days allow the opportunity to catch up with other trainees.

THE CITY
Leeds is a very vibrant city with lots of culture and a world class food and drink scene. Elsewhere around the region York's heritage and cobbled streets offer a beautiful alternative to the Leeds metropolis and Hull has recently enjoyed being the UK's capital of culture of 2017.
There really is so much going on. As a group of registrars from different backgrounds and hobbies, everyone has found something to keep them occupied outside of the workplace including ballet, rock-climbing, cycling, wine-tasting, running, bell-ringing.... the opportunities really are endless.

THE WORK
Of course I can't talk about the best bits of haematology training in Yorkshire without mentioning a bit about the job itself. The combination of the tertiary centre in Leeds and district general placements offers a range of clinical experience to meet all the curriculum requirements. We also have one of just 5 trainee posts offered nationally which are sponsored by NHSBT, dedicating time to transfusion training which is invaluable for exam preparation

Perhaps more unique to our deanery, the PNH national service has a centre at St James, from which it manages patients from the whole of the UK (outside of London). Most trainees have the opportunity to spend 4 months working with this team, doing outreach clinics around the country and gaining invaluable experience working with experts in this rarer condition.  http://www.pnhleeds.co.uk/

There is also the opportunity to spend 4 months working within the team in HMDS, a laboratory specialising in the diagnosis of haematological malignancies. They provide a comprehensive diagnostic service to the Yorkshire  as well as receiving referrals from across the UK and acting as a diagnostic reference centre for many national and international clinical trials. Trainees have found this post invaluable, particularly for preparing for the morphology aspect of the FRCPath exam. http://hmds.info/

RESEARCH
Placements at St James University Hospital offer the chance to work closely with those involved in clinical trials. For trainees who are interested in research the deanery actively encourages this with 2 of our current trainees in the middle of their PhD project. There is also an academic trainee currently working within HMDS.

THE LINKS
And of course if you do want to get away... as someone who moved to Leeds from the North East, but spent time training in London it was important to choose somewhere accessible for my registrar training. Yorkshire is very well connected, taking about 1hr to get west from Leeds to Manchester, 2hr10 to London and just less than 3hr to get to Edinburgh. For those looking to travel out and about further afield we have both Leeds Bradford and Humberside airport closeby.
