Assessments

The Yorkshire and Humber School of Psychiatry is committed to delivering fair, transparent, and supportive assessment processes that enable trainees to progress confidently through training.

Assessment is designed to evaluate both clinical competence and professional development and includes:

  • Workplace-Based Assessments (WPBAs) – including ACE, CBD, Mini-ACE, and DOPS etc.
  • Multi-Source Feedback (MSF) – supporting reflection on teamworking and professional behaviours
  • Royal College of Psychiatrists examinations – including MRCPsych Papers (A+B) and CASC

Progression is formally reviewed through the Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP) process, ensuring trainees meet curriculum requirements across all domains.

To ensure consistency and high-quality governance across a large training programme, the Head of School, Dr Alex Pavlovic, chairs a central ARCP panel every two months. This provides oversight across all rotations and specialties and supports a fair, standardised, and transparent approach to progression decisions.

The School places strong emphasis on:

  • Constructive feedback and reflective practice
  • Educational supervision as a developmental space. Each trainee has 1 hour of protected supervision a week.
  • Early identification and supportive management of trainees in difficulty

Findings from the 2025 GMC National Training Survey (NTS) demonstrate strong performance across key domains, particularly:

  • Clinical supervision (~95%)
  • Out-of-hours supervision (~93%)
  • Educational supervision (~88%)
  • Overall trainee satisfaction (~87%)

These results reflect a consistently supportive training environment, while also informing ongoing quality improvement, including work around workload and service pressures.
