Rotherham is a commercial, rural and industrial centre in South Yorkshire, with a thriving indoor market complex. Being located between two motorways, (M1 and M18) and a major road (A1), means easy access to the shopping centres and attractions of the nearby cities of Sheffield, Leeds and Nottingham. Rotherham is also ideally situated for exploring the Peak District, Derbyshire, North Yorkshire, the East Coast and the Lake District. Nearby is the well-known Meadowhall shopping complex and the ‘Centertainment’ development which includes cinemas, bowling, a variety of restaurants and a night club. Also located in the ‘Don Valley Bowl’ is the Magna Development, Sheffield Arena, Ice Sheffield and Don Valley Stadium. The cities offer numerous theatres, and Rotherham has its own Civic Theatre and Arts Centre. Housing is affordable, with new developments both in and around the Town.

We have the following mandatory training events/days for 2019/20:-

  • Local Scheme CSA Preparation Day  -  12th November 2019 – full day training for all trainees at the Carlton Park Hotel, Rotherham. Payback date 31st December 19.
  • Safeguarding Children Day – 3rd March 2020 (Level 3 - ST3s – full day but these Trainees will be in a GP post).  ½ day training for ST1 and 2 trainees.
  • Joint Scheme Conference  -  Date TBC - full day training for all trainees at the New York Stadium, Rotherham.
  • Scheme Induction Day  -  11th August 2020  -  full day training for all trainees at the Carlton Park Hotel, Rotherham.

Please note - as these dates apply to ALL GP Trainees, study leave forms are unnecessary.

Alongside these days we have our Half-Day Release sessions.  Trainees are allocated 30 days of study leave per year, 20 (40 ½ days) of these are allocated to HDR sessions (pro-rata for LTFT trainees).  Unless a Trainee is on-call, nights, post nights, post weekends etc or on annual leave then they would be expected to attend.  As a Scheme we would aim for at least 80% attendance at HDR sessions

HDR Sessions are held every Tuesday afternoon from 1.30 - 5pm (sessions commence promptly at 2pm) at Oak House, Moorhead Way, Bramley, Rotherham, S66 1YY.

All our rotations are for three years, with an 18/18 month split in General Practice and Hospital posts. For the General Practice rotations, the trainees will be based in one of the 14 training practices located in and around the Rotherham area. The Programme has recently increased the number of training practices and trainers, and also has several prospective trainers who will be ready to commence training in 2012.

There are 21 hospital based posts in eight specialties which are: Paediatrics; Obstetrics and Gynaecology; Psychiatry; Accident and Emergency; Geriatric Medicine; Cardiology/Respiratory, Orthopaedics/ Surgery, Palliative Care and Dermatology/GU Medicine - all are based within the Rotherham General Hospital Foundation Trust. Together with one full-time post in Palliative Care which is based in the Rotherham Hospice on Broom Road, Rotherham. Please note that the Hospice is not an NHS body, therefore, during this attachment Trainees will be an employee of The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust. An on call supplement of 50% (band 1A) will be paid for providing a 1 in 5 non-resident on call commitment.

The Programme is in the process of expanding and developing by increasing the number of Trainers and Training Practices and also Hospital posts.
