LTHT is the busiest general surgical unit in the UK (NELA18/19). Delaying surgery for unwell patients is detrimental to outcomes and costs the NHS (RCS,14).The NHS Long Term Plan aims to improve number of same day review and discharge of acute patients from 20% to 33%, moving towards Same Day Emergency Care to avoid admissions. The Surgical Assessment Unit has a high patient turnover and increasing workload. It is an area for improvement within The Leeds Improvement Method, becoming one of the ‘Value Streams’ within the Trust. Pressure on workforce due to COVID-19 has increased. New ways of teamworking must be embraced to create a culture of inclusivity (People Plan 20/21).The Clinical Leadership Fellow will work with our acute surgical team to create ambulatory emergency careservices across general surgery & urology. They will optimise patient flow, create new pathways including virtual monitoring, ultimately reducing admissions, improving patient journey and experience.
