Level 2 Paediatric Dentistry Training in Yorkshire and the Humber
Level 2 paediatric dentistry training in Yorkshire and the Humber is a pioneering example of innovation in postgraduate dental education, providing a structured pathway for dentists who want to advance their skills in paediatric dentistry. The programme blends academic teaching with extensive hands-on clinical experience, ensuring dentists are equipped to deliver safe, effective, and patient-centred care.
A distinctive feature of the programme is its holistic, patient-focused approach. Participants treat children from a wide range of backgrounds across both urban and rural settings, developing strong clinical judgement, communication, and operative skills. Training prepares them not only to manage routine dental problems but also to care for children with complex needs—whether related to trauma, developmental anomalies, medical comorbidities, or challenging social circumstances.
The region is supported by a collaborative network of consultants and specialists, who act as mentors and provide a culture of support and shared learning. Participants gain advanced skills in areas such as behaviour management, trauma care, and prevention, while also learning to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams, including paediatricians, other dental specialties, and safeguarding professionals.
Through regular study days, simulation exercises, audit, and research opportunities, participants benefit from a diverse learning experience underpinned by evidence-based practice. Structured feedback and formative assessment ensure steady professional growth, helping participants become confident, reflective practitioners, skilled not only in clinical delivery but also as advocates for children’s oral health.
To date, 33 dentists have successfully completed the programme across three cohorts, with a further 14 currently in training. The programme’s quality has been recognised nationally, earning the BSPD Highly Commended Outstanding Innovation Award in 2023.
In January 2025, Yorkshire and the Humber held its second accreditation panel, with 24 dentists now accredited as Level 2 practitioners in paediatric dentistry. This has led to the commissioning of seven new Level 2 care pathways, where accredited GDPs manage patients transferred from local Community Dental Services waiting lists. Delivered on a sessional basis rather than through UDAs, these pathways allow children to be seen more quickly and closer to home, with all transferred patients receiving preventive care and advice as a core part of their treatment.
Feedback from patients, carers, practitioners, and practice staff has been overwhelmingly positive. Carers reported better access and excellent care and practitioners valuing the opportunity to deliver care in new ways whilst benefiting from stronger links with specialist services.

Testimonials from participants of the Level 2 complexity care training programme:
“I have really enjoyed my level 2 training programme and have seen an increase in my confidence with regards to treating more complex children. I have felt thoroughly well supported and would recommend the programme to anyone interested in improving their paediatric knowledge/experience. The training days have been excellent and well-tailored”.
“The Level 2 course has been such a brilliant experience. I have met like-minded dentists who share a passion for Paediatric Dentistry. The fact I could do it from my regular place of work, without having to apply for a year long post in a different area was brilliant. I have learnt so many new skills and have developed a good support network and feel I can pick up the phone or drop an email for advice”.
“The programme is exceptionally well put together and organised. The study days were excellent; curriculum covered, quality of speakers, practical sessions. I don't think it could have been any better.
I have previously done two postgrad diplomas, the first at significant cost to myself, the second at significant cost to my employer... this programme is easily on par with those diplomas”.
“Initially I was anxious as I have done very little postgraduate education. The course leaders and my mentor have been so helpful and approachable. I felt at ease asking questions which has helped my development. I feel the course has changed the way I look at a case. Rather than looking at the patients and thinking that mouth need a lot of work I have started to think what has caused this? I feel improvement of managing paediatric patients has improved my management”
