CCT / GMC.

The regulatory body for postgraduate medical education is the GMC (General Medical Council, www.gmc-uk.org). It has published a 'Quality Framework', outlining the responsibilities of those involved in medical training and the quality assurance processes. On-line, anonymous annual surveys of trainees and trainers are conducted, and the results are made available to the general public. Published standards for training include:-

  • Generic standards for training.
  • Standards for Curricula and Assessment Systems.
  • Standards for LETBs

The CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training) is awarded after successful completion of a specialty training programme, all of which has been prospectively approved by the GMC.

There has been a recent update to guidance, further information is contained in the attached document.

How do I apply for my CCT?

Once you have received your ARCP outcome 6, you can apply for your CCT. You should complete a form from the RCOG website and return it to them along with:

  • copies of all ARCPs and non-assessment forms
  • proof of completion of at least two ATSMs
  • evidence of GMC approval for all OOP time approved to count towards your CCT
  • Evidence of educational progression from SHO posts that you’re counting towards your training, e.g. copies of assessments (if you joined the training programme above ST1 since August 2007)
  • An up-to-date CV

The College will make a recommendation to the GMC. You will receive your certificate from the GMC within 3 weeks of the College making their recommendation.

The RCOG guidance on CCT is available here.

Alternative training pathways, in non-approved posts, can also lead to the Specialist Register by the award of a CESR (Certificate confirming Eligibility for Specialist Registration), otherwise known as the 'Article 14 Route'. These will now be approved by the GMC when the trainee takes up the post, rather than when the trainee completes their training.
