Revalidation

Revalidation for Licensed Doctors

Revalidation is the General Medical Council’s way of regulating licensed doctors. The aim is to support Postgraduate Doctors in their professional development, helping to improve quality, patient safety and public confidence in the profession. Revalidation started across the UK at the end of 2012.

Licensed doctors including doctors in foundation year two and specialty training will have to revalidate, usually every five years. In addition, for doctors in postgraduate training, you will also revalidate when you receive your Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT). This means that if your training lasts less than five years, your first revalidation will be at the point that you are awarded your CCT. If your training lasts longer than five years, you will be revalidated five years after the implementation of revalidation.

Revalidation could occur more than once, this is sometimes dependent on the length of your training programme.  This can occur but would not have any impact on your training, if you do have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us on our direct email: england.revalidation.yh@nhs.net.

If necessary changes need to be made to your revalidation date, we will do this on your behalf.  We are able to make revalidation recommendations 120 days ahead of your submission date, this is all again dependent on evidence being made available to us.

We are committed to enabling our doctors in postgraduate training to revalidate by providing as much information and support as possible and will provide you with regular updates.

Postgraduate Doctor in Training (PGDiT) Responsibilities

As a Postgraduate Doctor you are responsible for the following in relation to Revalidation:

  • Acknowledge your Revalidation Date and make a note of it
  • Ensure the necessary documents are completed and up to date (i.e. Form R /E-portfolio)
  • Respond to any correspondence received from the Revalidation Team in relation to evidence paperwork.  A delay in a response may lead to a delay in a revalidation recommendation being made
  • Ensure that the Revalidation Team are up to date with any investigations / sanctions that you may be involved within.  The Revalidation Team may have been informed by the relevant GMC contact but it would be worth sending information, just in case they have not been informed.

Possible Reasons for Deferrals

Occasionally we may need to defer your revalidation recommendation, reasons below.  A deferral does not mean you can no longer practice or continue in your training programme.

  • If relevant evidence has not been received as required
  • If you have not had an ARCP within the last 15 months
  • If you are involved in a sanction/ongoing GMC investigation
  • If you are a new starter with Yorkshire and Humber
  • If you have been involved in a Serious Incident/Complaint/Conduct issue and the case is still unresolved

Exception Reports:

The Trusts have a responsibility to report to the Deanery in relation to Postgraduate Doctor involvement with any Serious Incidents / Complaints or Conduct Issues. This is all documented on an Exception Report Form (template below).  When the Trusts submit the information to the Revalidation Team, these are processed accordingly but they have to ensure that a copy of the form is also copied to the Postgraduate Doctor too. Exception Report Template click here.

Form R / Documents

Form R

The Form R has 2 parts, Part A which is completed upon initial registration for a training programme.  Postgraduate Doctors in training must complete a Form R Part B ahead of their ARCP panel. Please note that it is the sole responsibility of the postgraduate doctor in training to complete and submit a Form R Part B to ePortfolio and via TIS Self-Service.

The Form R Part A and From R Part B should both now be completed via TIS Self- Service.

Please ensure you read the guidance document before completing the Form R Part B. Some schools have individual processes for Form R Part B, those trainees will be notified accordingly in advance of the panel meeting.
