ARCPs

The progress of each trainee is assessed at their Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP). This usually occurs in May/June (months 11 and 23) for most trainees and you will be informed of the dates of each meeting. Interim reviews are also carried out in months 8 and 20 of Core Medical Training. ARCP is a remote electronic exercise for the majority of trainees utilising the ePortfolio and carried out by representatives from Yorkshire and the Humber which may include the Head of School or Training Programme Director/Deputy, Royal College of Physicians Tutors, other members of the CMT/IMT committee and lay representatives and an external advisor from another LETB (Deanery). The panels will assess your progress in achieving the required competencies at the appropriate level. The criteria for satisfactory progression is set out in the ARCP decision aid available from JRCPTB.

A 10% sample of trainees, plus those where progression is uncertain, will be required to attend a formally-convened ARCP Panel where the TPD is accompanied by external and lay representatives. The trainee only meets the panel after its deliberations are concluded, to receive the outcome.

There are several potential ARCP outcomes, but most trainees will progress satisfactorily and receive an ARCP outcome 1 or 6. Other outcomes exist for those deemed to require remedial training. If the report from the Educational Supervisor is not available on the due date, or the competences not recorded in the e-portfolio, the ARCP Panel has insufficient evidence and therefore cannot award an ARCP outcome. The responsibility for the provision of this evidence lies with the trainee. If you are having problems you must contact your educational or clinical supervisor, your CMT/IMT programme director / RCP Tutor or one of the Heads of CMT/IMT. Unsatisfactory progress may delay or prevent progression to the next stage in your training and trainees who do not meet targets set at ARCP within the set time frame may be exited from the training programme.

Locating evidence in your ePortfolio

Working out where to put evidence in your eportfolio can be difficult so to ensure it's not missed during the ARCP process we've created a template for completion "Evidence for ARCP" which can be found via the doucments section at the bottom of this page. This both tells you where to put various documents but also provides a single document for you to fill in to evidence things like your clinic and teaching attendance which may be very hard for your TPDs to calculate otherwise. Although using this template isn't required we'd strongly recommend you do to ensure information doesn't get overlooked, missed or not uploaded by accident.
