Teaching & Training
Surgical Teaching Programme
The monthly Core Surgical Training Teaching Programme runs separately (and in parallel) in the three localities.
Each day is split into morning lectures covering topics relating to the core curriculum and afternoon sessions providing ‘hands-on’ basic surgical skills acquisition.
Due to the cost and logistical challenges in providing adequate facilities for all trainees, we ask that sessions are booked in advance. Please note that trainees can attend sessions in any locality and that 70% attendance is required for a successful ARCP. Attendance without prior booking may result in trainees being turned away.
The session timetable and access to the booking system can be found on the Teaching Sessions Booking page.
Please click for the 2019 - 2020 teaching schedule.
The School also hosts two further educational days – The School of Surgery Annual Conference and the Core Surgical Trainees' Day. Details to follow during the year.
Attendance at the Trainees Day and School of Surgery Conference count towards your 70% overall mandatory Teaching attendance. There are 10 Teaching Days. Therefore out of these 12 potential teaching opportunities 9 must be attended to achieve 70%.
The Core Surgery Programme encourages the use of exception reporting. If you are not getting information from your Trust about exception reporting, please contact your Guardian, Junior Doctors' Forum Rep and/or your Director of Medical Education.
An e-learning package is available which is aimed at Educational and Clinical Supervisors- you might need to signpost this to them and look at it yourselves.
